Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness
Student Evaluation Data
During the fall and winter of 2020, Carleton College conducted a review to assess my teaching. The college requested evaluation forms from approximately 125 students and received 64 responses. The forms asked the students to rate my effectiveness as a teacher on a scale from 1 to 7. Students were also asked several qualitative questions about me as a teacher. The results are summarized in a letter that is available on request from the Carleton College Dean’s office. The outcome of the quantitative evaluation is displayed below:
1: among the least effective
2: considerably less effective than average
3: less effective than average
4: of average effectiveness among Carleton faculty
5: more effective than average
6: considerably more effective than average
7: among the most effective
According to the Dean’s letter, the results are “within the range of teaching evaluation rankings for faculty who have earned tenure at Carleton in recent years.”
Additionally, from the winter of 2017 until the spring of 2022, I handed out my own evaluation forms for students to fill out at the end of each course I taught. My forms asked the students to rank my effectiveness on the same 1 to 7 scale used by the college. The graph below is the result of aggregating all students across all courses from winter 2017 until spring 2022.
